Do you remember the story of Joseph’s brothers arriving in Egypt as economic migrants having experienced the “lean years”? Do you remember the Hebrews were persecuted (and ultimately fled Egypt) not because of their colour certainly but because they were sensed as being too strong? Their numbers kept growing. Echoes of a complaint we hear in Britain. Do you remember Mary & Joseph were refugees because the power mad Herod couldn’t brook the possibility of another claimant to his throne? Do you remember the prophets reminded God’s ancient people they had to treat the ‘sojurner’ – stranger to you and me with respect? Do you remember that Jesus was born into a society where the great majority of the people were excluded because they were either unable to attend Temple worship (shepherds for example) or were ill, or were not pure?
I am sure you do remember all these things and many more I could list for you from the pages of the scriptures. All I ask is that in thinking about the first paragraph written in this little piece you think carefully of the second.
