We live in an age when the idea of community is absent from the lives of many in our land. They do not experience cohesion, only separation or isolation and they are the poorer for it. That sense of isolation and pressure raises issues about mental health and well-being. Both the elderly and the young are seeing rises in these factors. One of the few opportunities for community in the truest sense of the word is the church. Where else will you find people of different ages, hobbies, likes etc., all coming together, young and old, and all the other variations on the theme of humanity? In our world that sense of belonging that is missing from the lives of so many can be found and experienced within the Christian community so now is the time to get out and shout about it so that all can share in it.
In a couple of weeks we are having a fun day. Ranald has a whole pile of us cycling, walking, dancing and generally skipping along to raise funds for a group of people who don’t feel they belong – the clients of the Lodging House Mission. We will all be up at Whitelee Windfarm up at Newton Mearns sharing what it means to belong to our community in aid of another community. It will be great fun – so Ranald keeps telling me. I’m cycling. Check the church website for details.
The community of the church offers a place for everyone, a place where folk can be heard, share their concerns, be encouraged, given hope. We are that community – isn’t it great that we start all over for the new session in the coming days.
God bless you all
